Wike Slams FCT Area Council Chairmen Over Teachers’ Unpaid Salaries

Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Barrister Nyesom Wike, has announced that the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has successfully implemented 95 per cent of its 2024 budget. Speaking in Abuja on Monday following an inspection of several ongoing infrastructure projects, Wike highlighted the administration’s efficient use of funds and adherence to budget timelines.

The minister explained that the 2024 budget had been formally extended to the end of June, allowing for continued execution of approved projects without any financial obstacles.

“There has been no hindrance to funding of the projects. In terms of implementation of the 2024 budget, I can tell you we have done not less than 90-95 per cent of the budget. But that is history. That has never happened before,” Wike stated.

He noted that the 2024 budget had already been submitted to the National Assembly, which is currently on recess and set to resume on 29 April. Upon resumption, the FCTA is expected to defend its 2025 Appropriation Bill. However, Wike emphasised that this has not affected the progress of ongoing works.

Wike Hails Abuja Projects Progress

“These projects are part of the 2024 budget, which was extended to June ending. So, we are doing what is within the law. The remaining part of the 2025 will now be used to pay the contractors here; that is, the Statutory Budget for the FCT,” he explained.

Wike also expressed satisfaction with the progress and standard of current projects, particularly the ongoing renovation of the International Conference Centre (ICC) and key roadworks across the capital.

“Frankly speaking, we are very impressed with what was scheduled. The contractors, who are handling these various jobs, have lived up to expectations, and we are also doing our part by making sure payments are also made so that there will not be delays from either of the sides,” he remarked.

He commended the transformation of the ICC, stating: “Those of you who knew how it was and see what it is today will be impressed. Yes, the Conference Centre is coming back to what it is supposed to be.”
