Trump’s Record-Breaking Flurry of Executive Orders

President Donald Trump has issued 79 executive orders since taking office again on January 20. These orders cover everything from transgender rights to foreign policy.

In an attempt to swiftly restructure the US government, Trump has used his pen as a weapon, focusing on federal bureaucracy, trade, and civil rights. His Republican Party only holds slim majorities in Congress.

The Federal Register has published the executive acts since 1937, and no US president has signed so many executive measures so rapidly since then.

Trump has had strong opposition. The New York University School of Law’s Just Security monitored the situation and found that 16 of the orders had been challenged in court by February 27.

Below is a list of the primary issues that the 47th president of the United States has targeted.

– Economy and trade –

An AFP count shows that Trump has issued 27 orders so far on the economy, including support for fossil fuels, customs tariffs, and the establishment of a sovereign fund.

Twelve are related to trade and customs taxes, including the possibility of tariffs on Canada and Mexico and the current 10% levy on Chinese imports.

Among other actions, he declared a “national energy emergency” to fulfil his campaign pledge to “drill, baby, drill” for oil.

The billionaire, who says the green energy transition is a “scam”, has also signed orders against electric cars, wind projects, and dumping paper straws in favour of plastic.

– Diversity and gender –

Trump’s campaigns against transgender individuals and his attack on programmes that address racism, sexism, and inequality in the workplace have resulted in at least 14 orders on gender and diversity.

Among the actions taken were the recognition of only male and female genders, the exclusion of transgender individuals from the military, and limitations on gender transition processes for those under the age of 19. All of these orders are being contested in court.

Additional directives prohibit the army and government organisations from engaging in any form of positive racial or gender discrimination in employment.

– Immigration –

Another priority, immigration, is covered by 15 orders.

A resolution that was signed in January declared refugee admissions “detrimental to the interests of the United States” and stopped them.

After that, the administration stopped providing funds to NGOs involved in the refugee programme. The order was later blocked by a US court.

In addition, Trump signed an order aiming to redefine the US Constitution’s 14th Amendment, which states that anybody born in the US is a citizen.

This has sparked a legal dispute that may eventually reach the conservative-leaning Supreme Court.

Trump declared English to be the official language of the United States in his 77th directive, which he signed on Saturday.

– DOGE –

Elon Musk, Trump’s primary cost cutter, is in charge of the so-called Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), which has been empowered by six of his executive orders.

Among the most recent directives is the “deconstruction of the overbearing and burdensome administrative state.”

– Health –

There are thirteen orders on health.

The United States’ withdrawal from the World Health Organisation and the revocation of orders issued by his predecessor, Joe Biden, protecting access to abortion medicines and the privacy of abortion data were among Trump’s first actions after taking office.

Along with banning all federal funding for schools that enforce the Covid vaccine, he also issued orders restoring military personnel who had been dismissed for refusing to receive the vaccine.

– Technology –

Trump has issued ten orders on technology, including three on artificial intelligence and two on cryptocurrencies.

Despite worries about conflicts of interest, Musk, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla, whose businesses have billion-dollar federal contracts, has given him close advice.
