Tinubu Disowns Early 2027 Campaign Ads, Presidency Calls for Halt

The Presidency has ordered the immediate removal of campaign billboards promoting a 2027 re-election bid for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, which have recently appeared across several parts of the country. The directive affirms that both leaders remain focused on their present responsibilities in building the nation.

In a statement released by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, the Presidency clarified that President Tinubu has neither sanctioned nor endorsed any person or group to initiate a 2027 campaign on his behalf via any form of media, including print, digital platforms, broadcast, or outdoor advertising.

Mr Onanuga condemned the billboards, stating that as law-abiding officeholders, President Tinubu and Vice President Shettima do not support any activities that could compromise Nigeria’s democratic institutions or electoral integrity.

“The Presidency has observed, with dismay, the increasing number of billboards in some cities promoting the 2027 campaign for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima.

“Worth noting is that some of these billboards with pictures of the President and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, emblazoned on them are springing up in Abuja and Kano in particular.

He noted that while the President and his deputy are grateful for the enthusiasm and steadfast support of their followers, they do not condone any campaign efforts that contravene the laws of the country.

“The electoral law that guides the conduct of elections and political campaigns forbids any form of campaign for the 2027 general elections. Premature campaigning can undermine the integrity of the electoral process and create unfair advantages.

“Until the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) sets the timetable for the 2027 elections, the President has not endorsed or authorised anyone or any group to mount a 2027 campaign for him through any media channel—be it Out-of-Home, print, digital, radio, or television.

“Therefore, we urgently call on individuals and groups funding this 2027 political campaign through the ongoing deployment of materials on billboards nationwide to cease immediately.

He added that the President and Vice President remain fully devoted to delivering on their current agenda, which includes revitalising the economy, developing human capital, renewing infrastructure, boosting social investment, and strengthening national security.

Mr Onanuga concluded that any announcement regarding the 2027 elections from President Tinubu will only come after INEC formally permits electioneering activities to commence.
