The House of Representatives has called on the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to swiftly deliver relief supplies and essential support to communities in Delta State that were struck by a severe wind and rainstorm.
The appeal was made in response to the urgent need for intervention in the Jeddo, Ugbokodo, and Ughoton communities within the Okpe Local Government Area, which were significantly impacted by the storm. The House also requested NEMA to carry out an immediate post-disaster assessment to evaluate the extent of the damage in the affected regions.
These resolutions came after the House adopted a motion of urgent public importance, presented by Mr Benedict Etanabene during plenary. The motion highlighted the need for prompt action following the storm, which tore through the communities on 15 April 2025.
While presenting the motion, Mr Etanabene stated that the storm wreaked havoc on the peaceful and economically vital communities, causing extensive damage.
“Also notes that the havoc wrecked by the hurricane rainstorm on Jeddo, Ugbokodo and Ughoton communities were unprecedented, leaving wide spread destruction of properties and other means of livelihood of the people of the affected areas which runs into Hundreds of Millions of Naira.”
He further explained that over 2,000 homes had their roofs either completely or partially destroyed, with hundreds of buildings demolished. Vital infrastructure, including electricity and telecommunications facilities, was severely affected, displacing thousands of residents.
“Curious that, the residents of these affected communities are in dire need of aids to cushion the effect of the disaster that befalls them,” the motion added.
Mr Etanabene warned that failing to intervene quickly could worsen the already dire conditions, particularly at a time when the broader economic situation in the country is already challenging. He stressed the need for urgent provision of shelter, construction materials, basic household items, financial aid, and medical care for those affected.
In response, Speaker of the House Mr Tajudeen Abbas directed the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Management to ensure that the resolutions are effectively implemented.
