The Inspector-General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, has announced the immediate reorganisation of the Police Mobile Force (PMF) in a strategic move aimed at boosting internal security and enhancing the unit’s operational efficiency.
The announcement came during a conference held at the Force Headquarters in Abuja, where the IGP addressed PMF Squadron Commanders. He stressed the importance of repositioning the PMF to fulfil its foundational role as the Nigeria Police Force’s elite tactical team, intended to respond rapidly to civil unrest, emergencies, and violent incidents.
IGP Egbetokun voiced his concern over the increasing trend of deploying PMF officers to duties that fall outside their core responsibilities—such as providing personal security for private individuals and VIPs. He noted that such practices have significantly weakened the operational strength and focus of the unit.
In response, the Police Chief unveiled a series of reforms, which include the immediate withdrawal of PMF officers from unauthorised assignments, the institution of quarterly training programmes centred on ethics and professionalism, and the requirement for all Squadrons to maintain fully equipped, combat-ready teams available for rapid deployment.
He further stated that PMF Commanders would be held accountable for the behaviour and discipline of their personnel. Emphasising leadership through action, he encouraged regular training, inspections, and mentorship to instil discipline, uphold human rights, and ensure operational excellence.
Reaffirming the commitment of the Force to restoring the PMF as a dependable and disciplined tactical force, IGP Egbetokun revealed plans to introduce modern leadership models and capacity-building efforts that align with international security standards.
In expressing gratitude to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, for his continued support, the IGP also acknowledged the valuable contributions of international partners in strengthening the PMF’s technical and training capacities. He urged all PMF Commanders to approach the reforms with a sense of professional and ethical duty, reiterating the Nigeria Police Force’s unwavering mission to protect lives, property, and the nation’s overall security.
