Oyo House Calls for Strategic Overhaul of Trailer Parking Infrastructure

The Oyo State House of Assembly has urged the state government to revive trailer parks in Ogbomoso and other parts of the state as a measure to boost road safety and stimulate economic growth. This resolution was adopted following a motion moved by Hon. Abideen Ogundare, the representative for Ogo-Oluwa/Surulere state constituency, during Tuesday’s plenary session, which was presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Hon. Muhammed Fadeyi.

In presenting the motion, Hon. Ogundare underscored the essential role of trailer parks in reducing traffic congestion by offering designated parking areas for trailers, thereby preventing them from blocking major roads. He pointed out that the reactivation of trailer parks would not only improve road safety but also bolster the state’s revenue, generate employment opportunities, and support local businesses.

He noted that this initiative aligns with Governor Seyi Makinde’s economic expansion agenda, stressing that effective logistics and transport infrastructure is key to driving commercial activities and ensuring the safety of both residents and road users.

Following a unanimous adoption of the motion, the Deputy Speaker, on behalf of the Assembly, called for a joint effort between the state and local governments to conduct a thorough evaluation of all dormant trailer parks across the state, with the goal of rehabilitating them for functional use.

The motion also proposed the establishment of new trailer parks in strategic areas to discourage roadside parking and enhance traffic safety. It recommended the development of a public-private partnership model to guarantee the efficient management and sustainability of these parks, enabling private investors to participate in their development and upkeep.

Additionally, the Assembly proposed the implementation of regulations requiring trailer drivers to use the designated parks, with appropriate enforcement mechanisms to prevent unauthorised roadside parking.

To ensure inclusive and practical implementation, the Deputy Speaker directed the House Committee on Transport to liaise with relevant stakeholders, including trailer drivers’ unions, logistics firms, and local community leaders, to gather insights and suggestions on the effective operation of trailer parks.
