OpenAI Developing ChatGPT-Powered Social Platform to Rival X

OpenAI is reportedly in the early stages of developing its own social media platform, closely resembling Elon Musk’s X (formerly known as Twitter). The prototype, which is already undergoing internal testing, is said to revolve around ChatGPT’s image generation capabilities, forming a social feed that encourages visual content sharing and interaction.

According to Reuters, the new platform marks a significant shift for OpenAI, indicating its ambitions to become a key player in social content distribution. CEO Sam Altman is reported to be privately gathering external feedback, suggesting that the company is taking careful steps before deciding whether to launch the network as a separate application or integrate it within the existing ChatGPT environment.

This development comes amid heightened tensions between OpenAI and Elon Musk, who in February 2025 led a $97.4 billion unsolicited bid to acquire OpenAI’s nonprofit parent organisation. The offer was firmly rejected by the board on 14 February, which reaffirmed its dedication to OpenAI’s core mission of advancing artificial general intelligence (AGI) for the greater good. The board also described any similar future proposals as disingenuous.

Musk’s legal representative criticised OpenAI’s transition into a public benefit corporation, alleging it would financially benefit specific board members rather than serve its charitable mandate. In response to Musk’s acquisition offer, Altman took to X with a sarcastic remark:
“No, thank you, but we will buy Twitter for $9.74 billion if you want.”

This public jab further underscored the growing rivalry between the two tech moguls, whose strained relationship traces back to their time as OpenAI co-founders in 2015. Their feud has been amplified by ongoing legal confrontations. After Musk initially sued OpenAI in 2024 over its corporate restructuring, accusing the company of straying from its altruistic mission, he withdrew the case only to file a new one in August. OpenAI has since countersued, accusing Musk of harassment and requesting a federal court injunction to prevent further alleged misconduct.

The creation of a social media network also appears to be a strategic step for OpenAI, offering the company an opportunity to gather real-time, user-generated data. Such data is invaluable for training AI models, as demonstrated by platforms like X and Meta, which use user input to power their respective systems, Grok and Llama. OpenAI’s vision, sources suggest, is to harness this platform not only as a data source but also as a tool to help users create richer, more engaging content—potentially transforming ChatGPT into a dynamic space for media sharing and live conversation.
