MTN Nigeria has unveiled a fresh identity for its fibre broadband service, rebranding it from MTN Fibre Broadband to FibreX. This strategic shift was officially announced on Friday by the company’s Chief Broadband Officer, Mr Egerton Idehen, who described it as a key step in MTN’s commitment to advancing Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.
“The launch of FibreX reiterates our dedication to supporting Nigeria’s digital transformation journey,” Idehen stated, underlining the operator’s renewed focus on enhancing connectivity.
The rebranding is closely aligned with the objectives of the National Broadband Plan (NBP) 2020–2025, which targets 70% broadband penetration across the country by 2025. This includes the provision of minimum download speeds of 25 Mbps in urban zones and 10 Mbps in rural areas. Idehen expressed confidence in FibreX’s ability to support these targets through robust service delivery and network development.
“By enhancing our infrastructure and services, we aim to bridge the digital divide and foster inclusive growth,” he noted, pointing to MTN’s broader digital inclusion agenda.
MTN is also playing a proactive role in supporting the Federal Government’s ambitions to broaden the national fibre optic footprint. FibreX, according to Idehen, is expected to significantly contribute to extending the current national fibre capacity from 35,000 km to 125,000 km. This ambitious infrastructure drive includes plans to lay an additional 90,000 km of fibre cables across Nigeria.
While the underlying FTTH (Fibre to the Home) technology remains unchanged, the company believes that the new branding better reflects its evolving identity and resonates more deeply with modern consumers.
“While the service continues to rely on our powerful FTTH infrastructure, the new brand name represents a more modern, relatable, and emotionally engaging identity,” Idehen explained.
He further elaborated that the name FibreX was selected to create a more personal connection with users and to enhance their overall experience.
“The goal is to educate and excite consumers in home-passed locations about the benefits of FibreX,” he added, describing home-passed locations as premises within a serviceable area that are eligible to be connected to MTN’s fibre network.
As Nigeria intensifies its push for digital access and inclusion, MTN maintains that innovations like FibreX will be pivotal to achieving universal connectivity.
In a related development, MTN Nigeria has entered into a strategic infrastructure-sharing agreement with Airtel Africa, covering operations in both Nigeria and Uganda. The collaboration aims to drive cost-efficiency, widen network coverage, and enhance service quality for mobile users.
The companies indicated that the partnership reflects a growing global trend, where telecom operators collaborate to optimise resources while maintaining service excellence. The scope of the agreement includes Radio Access Network (RAN) sharing and both commercial and technical cooperation for fibre infrastructure, with possibilities for jointly constructing new networks.
Discussions are already underway for similar partnerships in additional markets such as Congo-Brazzaville, Rwanda, and Zambia.
