Middlesbrough Sack Michael Carrick After Missing Play-Offs Again
Middlesbrough have parted ways with manager Michael Carrick following a disappointing end to the 2024/25 Championship season, in which the club failed to secure a play-off spot.
The 43-year-old former Manchester United and England midfielder had been in charge at the Riverside Stadium since October 2022. Although he led Boro to the play-offs in his first campaign, the team has failed to break into the top six in the two subsequent seasons.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the club confirmed Carrick’s departure along with his assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick.
“Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted company with head coach Michael Carrick,” the club said. “Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also departed the club. We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all their hard work and unwavering commitment. We wish them all the very best for the future.”
Boro finished 10th in the Championship table, just four points adrift of the play-off positions, after winning only one of their final six league games.
Carrick, who previously had a brief stint as interim manager at Manchester United, was widely praised for his initial impact at Middlesbrough, but recent underperformance has led the club to seek a new direction ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.
