Inclusive Housing Drive: FG Allocates 20% of New Homes Free to Vulnerable Nigerians

The Federal Government has unveiled a major housing initiative that will see the delivery of 77,400 homes across Nigeria, with 80% of the units earmarked for low-income earners who will make payments using just one-third of their monthly income. The remaining 20% will be allocated free of charge to the most vulnerable, including widows, orphans, and internally displaced persons (IDPs).

This ambitious project falls under the soon-to-be-launched Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme, a flagship component of the government’s broader strategy to reduce the country’s housing deficit and ensure inclusive access to shelter for all Nigerians. Under this plan, 100 housing units will be constructed in each of Nigeria’s 774 local government areas, making it one of the most extensive housing projects in the nation’s history.

The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Ahmed Musa Dangiwa, made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting with representatives of Creative Sphere Limited at the Ministry’s headquarters in Mabushi, Abuja. A statement from the Ministry released Thursday confirmed the details.

“The Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arc. Ahmed Musa Dangiwa has revealed that the much-talked-about Renewed Hope Social Housing Programme will soon be launched by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu as part of initiatives to address the housing needs of Nigerians, regardless of class or income level,” the statement read. According to the Minister, the initiative is tailored for Nigerians from both the formal and informal sectors, including the unemployed and vulnerable groups. The majority of the homes will be sold at affordable rates, with interested beneficiaries contributing a third of their monthly income. The remaining 20% of the units will be distributed at no cost to those who cannot afford any payment at all.

The programme will be financed through the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Development Fund (RHIDF), which is dedicated to supporting large-scale housing and infrastructure projects.

Beyond housing units, each estate will include essential community infrastructure such as schools, clinics, police posts, shopping areas, and recreational spaces — ensuring a safe and livable environment for all residents.

Dangiwa stated that the housing units are expected to be completed within a year from the programme’s official launch.

This initiative is part of a wider national housing strategy that also includes the development of Renewed Hope Housing Estates and Renewed Hope Cities, with the aim of creating sustainable and long-term housing solutions nationwide.

By combining affordable pricing with provisions for Nigeria’s most disadvantaged citizens, the government hopes to create an inclusive, accessible housing system that meets the needs of a diverse population and significantly reduces the housing shortfall across the country
