Four people remain in hospital following a shocking car incident during celebrations of Liverpool’s Premier League title victory, as police confirmed the number of injured has risen to 109.

Merseyside Police had initially stated that 79 people were hurt during the chaos in central Liverpool last Monday. However, Detective Superintendent Rachel Wilson said the investigation was “complex and constantly evolving”, with officers continuing to assess new reports of injuries.

“Officers are still working through and assessing those reporting being injured,” she added, noting the rising total reflected the scale of the incident.

The driver, identified as 53-year-old Paul Doyle, a former Royal Marine and father of three, has been charged with multiple offences. He appeared in court on Friday facing seven charges, including causing grievous bodily harm with intent and dangerous driving.

Doyle has been remanded in custody and is due back in court on 14 August, when he is expected to enter a plea.

The incident took place as thousands of Liverpool fans gathered in the city centre to celebrate their club’s historic 20th English top-flight title, which equals Manchester United’s record. What began as a joyous occasion quickly descended into panic and fear as a vehicle allegedly drove into the crowd.

The charges brought against Doyle relate to six specific victims, including two children aged 11 and 17. Police have not released details of the injuries sustained, but four individuals remain hospitalised as of Monday.

The investigation is ongoing, and authorities have appealed for any witnesses or those with footage to come forward.
