Nigerian Police Launch Full-Scale Response to Plateau Killings

The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has ordered the immediate and extensive deployment of tactical police units to Plateau State, following a wave of violent attacks that have affected several communities since 28 March 2025.

This directive was announced in a statement released by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Muyiwa Adejobi. He stated, “This decisive action underscores the Nigeria Police Force’s resolve to restore peace, ensure the safety and security of all residents, and bring perpetrators of these heinous crimes to justice.”

According to the statement, the IGP has assigned the Deputy Inspector-General of Police overseeing the Department of Operations (DIG DOPs), DIG Kwazhi Dali Yakubu, to lead and coordinate the operation. The intervention will include the deployment of additional highly skilled tactical officers, surveillance drones, Armoured Personnel Carriers (APCs), units of the Police Mobile Force, helicopters, and specialised teams from the Special Intervention Squad (SIS).

ACP Adejobi further explained that these resources will be strategically positioned to carry out targeted operations aimed at halting the recurring violence in Bokkos Local Government Area (LGA) and neighbouring communities, where the spate of attacks has resulted in significant loss of innocent lives.

The recent surge in violence was triggered by a brutal assault on 28 March in Bokkos, during which several individuals were killed and many others sustained serious injuries. This incident has since been followed by a series of coordinated attacks, plunging the affected areas into fear and uncertainty.

In light of the worsening security situation, the IGP instructed DIG Kwazhi and the deployed officers to implement a comprehensive strategy that not only aims to suppress the ongoing violence but also to pre-empt any further attacks.

Upon his arrival in Plateau State on Tuesday, 8 April 2025, DIG Kwazhi held a meeting with the Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Barr. Caleb Mutfwang. The meeting provided an opportunity to gain a clearer understanding of the conflict’s root causes and to develop a more sustainable solution to the crisis.

“The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, remains fully committed to working in close collaboration with the Plateau State Government, community leaders, security agencies, and all relevant stakeholders to restore lasting peace and stability to the region.

“The NPF urges residents to cooperate with the Police and other security agencies, providing any information that may assist in the ongoing investigation and efforts to maintain peace on the Plateau,” the statement concluded.
