The Nigerian government has pledged swift action to repair the severely damaged Benin-Sapele Road in Edo State, a critical route in southern Nigeria. This commitment came after an official appeal was made by the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority, highlighting the road’s poor condition and its far-reaching consequences.
Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, who made the assurance, acknowledged the grave implications the road’s current state has on national security and economic stability. During his response, he stated that the government is fully aware of the hardships being caused, particularly with regard to kidnappings, disruptions to food supply chains, and economic setbacks.
“I have listened with a heavy heart to your presentations. The kidnappings along that corridor, the economic losses, and the direct threat to food security are not palatable. This is not just about roads; it’s about national stability and the well-being of our people. I assure you that the Ministry, under the leadership of Engr. Umahi is committed to acting swiftly and decisively.”
In his appeal, Adekanmbi Samuel, Managing Director of the Benin-Owena River Basin Development Authority, gave a comprehensive overview of the situation on the 24-kilometre stretch. He pointed out the growing insecurity, the adverse effects on the economy, and how the road’s condition has disrupted agricultural activities and affected power infrastructure in the region.
