Nigerian Government Renews Group Life Insurance to Support Families of Fallen Public Servants

The Federal Executive Council (FEC) has approved the Group Life Assurance Scheme for the 2025/2026 policy year, reinforcing the Nigerian government’s commitment to the welfare and financial protection of civil servants and uniformed personnel.

The approval was announced following the sixth FEC meeting of the year, with Mrs. Didi Walson-Jack, Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, briefing journalists on the details of the renewed policy.

According to Walson-Jack, the scheme provides financial compensation to the next-of-kin of public servants who pass away during active service. The policy is fully funded by the federal government, ensuring automatic coverage for eligible beneficiaries once insurance premiums are remitted in line with the “no premium, no cover” regulation.

The 2025/2026 coverage includes top-ranking government officials such as the President, Vice President, Chief of Staff, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Ministers, Permanent Secretaries, as well as employees in federal ministries and treasury-funded agencies.

The scheme also extends to personnel in paramilitary agencies, including the:

Walson-Jack stated that 17 insurance firms were approved to manage the program this policy year, providing comprehensive, year-long coverage with effect upon premium payment and subject to renewal in 2026.

This federal development follows recent efforts by state governments to prioritize public servant welfare. Just last week, the Lagos State Government disbursed ₦978.62 million in insurance death benefits to 510 beneficiaries, in collaboration with LASACO Assurance Plc.

At the ceremony, Lagos Commissioner for Finance, Abayomi Oluyomi, reaffirmed the state’s dedication to supporting families of deceased public servants. He emphasized the importance of prudent financial management by beneficiaries and announced a follow-up disbursement in the next three months.

The federal government’s approval of the Group Life Assurance Scheme aligns with its broader social protection agenda — aimed at strengthening employee morale, ensuring economic stability for affected families, and fostering trust in public service careers.

By institutionalizing financial safeguards for its workforce, the Nigerian government continues to demonstrate its commitment to responsible governance and worker welfare.
