Google has expanded its AI-powered learning tool, NotebookLM, by introducing an Audio Overview feature in more than 50 languages, including Afrikaans and Swahili. The tool transforms written documents into dynamic, podcast-style conversations, making information more accessible and engaging for a wider global audience.
NotebookLM serves as an AI-driven assistant designed to simplify complex information by tailoring its responses to user-provided materials, such as lecture notes, PDFs, research papers, or web content. The recent integration of Gemini 2.5 Flash, introduced in April, has significantly enhanced the feature’s speed, accuracy and natural-sounding voice capabilities. Users can now also ask follow-up questions to the AI podcast hosts, deepening their understanding of the content.
“In Africa, where learning often happens across multiple languages, this update can make a real difference,” said Nanjala Misiko, Head of B2C Marketing at Google Africa. “Whether it’s a student revising notes in Swahili or a teacher preparing summaries in Afrikaans, we’re excited to help more people access and understand information in a way that truly works for them.”
The Audio Overview tool is proving particularly useful for learners and professionals alike. From students studying for exams to entrepreneurs analysing market research or creators developing new content, the ability to listen to summaries in one’s native language is reshaping the way people absorb information.
Additionally, users can now customise their experience further by selecting an “Output Language” within NotebookLM settings. This enables individuals to receive both audio and text responses in their chosen language. For instance, a student in Dar es Salaam can upload biology notes written in English but opt to hear the summary in Swahili. Likewise, a teacher in Cape Town can prepare classroom content with summaries available in both English and Afrikaans, ensuring inclusive learning experiences across multilingual settings
