The Yobe State University Teaching Hospital (YSUTH) in Damaturu has secured full accreditation from the West African College of Physicians (WACP) to train a total of 25 resident doctors.
This development was announced on Monday by Governor Mai Mala Buni through a statement issued by Mamman Mohammed, the Director-General of Press and Media Affairs at the Government House, Damaturu.
Governor Buni revealed the achievement during an unannounced inspection of the hospital’s Community Medicine Department, a facility developed as part of his administration’s initiatives.
He emphasised that both the accreditation and the completion of the department would play a key role in enhancing the state’s healthcare workforce.
“The accreditation and completion of the project are indeed monumental achievements by the administration towards enhancing manpower training for improved healthcare service delivery,” Buni was quoted as saying in the statement.
The governor was joined on the visit by Senator Musa Mustapha (APC – Yobe East) and other high-ranking government officials.
The accreditation came after a thorough evaluation by a WACP assessment team, which visited the department between 11 and 14 November 2024.
In a letter addressed to the hospital and signed by WACP Secretary-General Dr Musa Dankyau, the college confirmed that full accreditation had been granted for a five-year period.
“Junior residents, 15 in number, while senior residents, 10.
“Please note that you are expected to reapply for reaccreditation six months before the due date of 23rd March, 2030.”
This milestone represents a major step forward in Yobe State’s ongoing efforts to advance medical education and healthcare delivery across the region.
